The IRS wants to make taxpayers aware of its private debt collection agency (PCA) program. Certain outstanding tax debts may be sent to a PCA. Before the assigned PCA calls a taxpayer, the taxpayer will receive a letter from the IRS and a letter from the PCA. The letters will include a Taxpayer Authorization Number (TAN), which the PCA uses to verify the taxpayer’s identity, and the taxpayer can use to verify that the PCA was assigned by the IRS. Taxpayers who receive letters are advised to obtain tax transcripts to verify the tax debt. PCA agents are required to provide respectful, courteous service. Contact us with questions.
