The IRS is providing temporary relief for some delinquent taxpayers who were going to lose their passports. Earlier in August, the IRS reminded taxpayers that they may not be able to renew a current passport, or obtain a new passport, if they’re delinquent in paying federal taxes. A 2015 law made having a “seriously delinquent tax debt” grounds for denial, revocation or limitation of a passport. For 2019, a seriously delinquent tax debt is $52,000. Now the IRS has issued a memo stating there is a temporary reprieve in some cases. Taxpayers who are working with the Taxpayer Advocate Service (they have open cases) are excluded from losing their passports. (TAS-13-0819-0014)
