Taxpayers generally don’t think about their tax filing status until it’s time to file. But you should be aware of it through the year, especially if there’s a change. Your filing status determines your filing requirements, standard deduction, eligibility for certain credits and the correct amount of taxes. Changes that may affect your status include marriage; divorce; birth or adoption of a child; and death. Your filing status is determined by your situation on the last day of the year.
